Sargent and The Sea

When I went to the Summer Show at the RA ' Sargent and the Sea' had not opened yet but I did buy a postcard. I love sending cards, especially seascape ones. Well we do have a seaside cottage so they do come in useful. I do not believe the American dandy John Springer ever made it to Kingsdown but he did paint in Whitby after settling in England.
Rachel Campbell Johnston over tea told me she gave the show a No!.' Dull' she said. Waldamir what's her from the Sunday Times gave it a so so but Ricahrd Dorment in the Daily Telegraph gave it a Yes! He calls him 'A man of amazing talent'. I believe he painted most of these pictures when he was about twenty.
Britain's got 'Sargent' & that can only be a good thing.

Robert Stephen PerenoSunday morning & tea in hand read Laura Cummings critique in the Observer. What an erudite , knowledgeable bright young thing. A whole page dedicated to telling us eloquently why Sargent is no good & I guess we should not bother going. Its a sort of anti-advert. But I had time on my hands, live across the road & so off I went for my first visit, this time solo. As I am a member like making various visits to RA shows. My knowledge of art history is minimal but I like to think I know what I would put up on my walls. Im afraid Ms Cumming I loved this elegant show by the Dandy John Springer Sargent who (love it) painted in a tail coat. I would love to have one of his sea paintings for our much loved & stylish 'Babette's work' Seaview Cottage, sadly it would have to be a print & we try to avoid that.
